The Crypt of St Lucy
Bellow the Cathedral of St Domnius, the former mausoleum of the Roman emperor Diocletian, hides the chapel dedicated to St Lucy, the martyr of Syracuse, the patron saint of those will eye illnesses and children. A yearly mass is delivered within the crypt on the feast day of St Lucy, on December 13, when the faithful light the candles in front of the crypt and take the holy water from its slow filling spring for the protection of the eyes. In the Croatian tradition, the feast day of St Lucy marks the last day for the sowing of the Christmas wheat.
The crypt is accessible to the public, though a ticket must be purchased at its entrance. The crypt is included in all-in-one cathedral complex of Split ticket that includes visits to the cathedral, the bell tower, the treasury of the cathedral and the baptistery of St John.
