After a four month renovation project the Square of Gajo Bulat, colloquially known as the ‘Square In Front of the National Theater‘, was finally presented to the general public. Often being listed as one of the ugliest public spaces around the city center, the face-lifting project is reported to cost 3.7 million kunas, funded by the municipal government, which had given the area a fresh breath of life after decades of neglect.
The once crackling asphalt surface has now been replaced by the sparkling white stone pavement, a tactful little micro park with a selection of authentic native trees and shrubs mixed in with palms, as well as the added statue in honor of the late mayor of Split Gajo Bulat (1836-1900), during whose mayorship the municipal theater building was first constructed, as well as a fountain built in the memory of the ancient spring ‘Pozzo Bon’ (eng. ‘good well’), which had been in use by the residents of Split since time memorial up to modernity, and which has given the name to this area of the town in its Croatian form ‘Dobri’.
