Every June, the city of Split transforms into a hub of cinematic magic thanks to the Festival of Mediterranean Film Split (FMFS) — one of the locally most beloved and culturally relevant event. With a vibrant atmosphere and a handpicked selection of films, FMFS attracts around 15,000 visitors each year who come not only for the movies but for the unique open-air cinematic experience trademarked by the festival
A Celebration of Mediterranean Cinema
At the heart of FMFS are competition programs that spotlight films from Mediterranean countries. However, through its rich side programs, the festival also introduces audiences to cinematic gems from other European and global regions. Over 100 films are screened during the ten-day festival, making Split a true meeting point of cultures and creativity.
Iconic Venues by the Sea and in the Historic Gripe Fortress
The festival opens on June 12 at the beloved Bačvice Open-Air Cinema, just a stone throw away from the Adriatic Sea. But the ten-day event will feature screenings on Fortress Gripe, Zlatna Vrata Art Cinema and Đardin Park.
Evening screenings at Bačvice and Gripe Fortress traditionally attract the largest crowds, with visitors happy to sit on stone walls or beach towels to enjoy the show. Its precisely that laid-back vibe that gives FMFS its unmistakable Mediterranean charm
Daytime screenings will be held at the stunning Zlatna Vrata Art Cinema, located within the 1,700-year-old Diocletian’s Palace, and in the shady gardens of Đardin Park. Together, these venues reflect the perfect blend of history, leisure, and love for cinema.
A Platform for Filmmakers, Big and Small
FMFS is not just about watching films — it’s also about meeting the people behind them. The festival hosts a variety of short film programs, Q&A sessions with acclaimed local and international filmmakers, and promotes rising talents. More and more young creators choose FMFS to premiere their work, seeing it as an inspiring and supportive stage for their stories.
Screenings by Day, Parties by Night
While days are filled with film and conversation, nights at Bačvice Open-Air Cinema turn into legendary FMFS parties — the perfect warm-up for the summer ahead. Music, laughter, and a stunning seaside backdrop make these events a highlight of the festival.
For the Youngest Viewers: Mali MeDITEran
FMFS also nurtures future film lovers through Mali MeDITEran, a program designed for children aged 3 and up. Carefully selected animated and live-action films — both short and feature-length — introduce young audiences to quality domestic and European cinema in a fun and educational way.
